Murcia-San Javier Airport

Visitors to Costa Blanca using air travel are well catered for as the region boasts two airports, Murcia-San Javier Airport which is especially handy for the Orihuela Costa area, and the larger Alicante Airport. Flying into Murcia Airport, as it's more commonly referred to, is a pleasure and it's very seldom passengers will take longer than 30 minutes from stepping off the plane to stepping into the glorious sunshine outside the terminal ready for their holiday.

Which Airport

Before the onslaught of budget airlines when air travel was considered a luxurious treat, for most travellers the first priority was to find the cheapest possible flight and then worry about onward travel to their holiday destination. Nowadays you need to consider which airport to fly into if you have a choice, even if the airfare for the airport furthest from your accommodation is half the cost of the airfare to the closer airport. For example, if you find a dirt cheap £29 flight from UK to Murcia-San Javier Airport but are holidaying in Benidorm, you wont get much change from €200 for the taxi fare.

Getting To Murcia Airport

There are good road links to the airport from the entire Costa Blanca coastal area via the National N-332 road which predominantly hugs the coastline, and the AP-7 motorway that from some areas offers a faster option but does have tolls. Inland access to the airport is via the National N-340.

Murcia-San Javier Airport Facilities

Passengers using Murcia-San Javier Airport can enjoy a good selection of services, duty free shops, bars, restaurants, comfortable lounge areas, parking areas and a choice of onward travel options including car hire and taxis.

Duty Free Shop – Located after customs and security control, the airport duty free shop offers a selection of beverages, confectionery, cigarettes, tobacco, cosmetics, fragrances and gift ideas.

Bars & Restaurants (Public) – The airport has a selection of eateries both landside and airside. Available to the public is the Serunion Restaurante that has a range of food and beverages in the large restaurant just inside the terminal, and a charming outside bar and terrace area that always impresses first time visitors with its chilled out feel, giving an indication of the holiday to come.

Bars & Restaurants (Passengers Only) – Once through customs and security control passengers can enjoy meals and drinks in a further Serunion Restaurante, create their own snack in the popular Subway or treat themselves to Spanish delights in the Ibérica Gormet Shop.

Airport Transport & Parking

With Murcia-San Javier Airport being the smaller of the two that service the Costa Blanca, transport options are quite limited with no bus service at all. That leaves only car hire or being picked up by friends or family. By browsing the local Orihuela Costa and Costa Blanca Facebook social and buy & sell groups before travelling, visitors arriving at the airport may find private individuals offering an airport collection and drop off service cheaper than the local taxis but this is not exactly legal, although hard to prove unless money is seen changing hands. Physical fights between ‘moonlighters' and taxi drivers has been known to happen too so choosing this option is at the travellers own risk.

Taxis – Murcia-San Javier Airport officially uses the services of Santiago de la Ribera Taxis who pick up directly outside the terminal doors and charge a supplement for airport pick up as well as a supplement for each item of luggage. The price of the journey is on top of that and is by taxi meter.

International Car Hire Companies – The international car hire companies that service the airport are Goldcar Rental, Europcar and Firefly Car Rental. Hiring a car is possible upon arrival although advanced booking is always advisable, especially during peak summer season and for travellers who wish a certain type of vehicle such as one with automatic transmission.

Independent Car Hire Companies – Passengers wishing to use the services of an independent car hire company should contact them in advance of arrival although representatives can sometimes be found in the terminal who will offer car hire without pre-booking. Travellers may find a cheaper deal than the international companies, however there are factors to consider.

Vehicle choice may be limited and vehicles may be in disrepair so a thorough vehicle check in the presence of a company representative is highly advised. At we always recommend using an independent company with a good reputation and they don't get more reputable than the well established COYS RENT-A-CAR.

Car Parking – The airport car park is conveniently located right outside the terminal and parking charges are very reasonable. Long term parking is also available at a special rate.
