RYA Sailing Courses
The sunny Costa Blanca provides the perfect setting for water sports and activities and anyone who is keen on boats can choose from a number of RYA sailing courses, either to gain competence for recreational sailing or to gain qualifications in order to pursue a career in sailing or yachting. Our seas and oceans can be extremely unpredictable and whether you are piloting a kayak or large yacht, having no experience is a recipe for disaster. If you are thinking of a career at sea, be it on a small fishing boat or huge cruise liner, any of the available RYA sailing courses will look good on your CV and get you that step closer to landing a job at sea.
RYA Sailing Courses
Based in Alicante City, Costa Blanca Sailing are the only official RYA (Royal Yacht Association) approved sailing school on the Costa Blanca and run a selection of theoretical and practical RYA sailing courses from Start Yachting to Coastal Skipper. Their Elan Impression 434 yacht is bright and spacious and equipped with the latest navigation and safety equipment. During the practical courses all students have their own cabin and the yacht features an air conditioned saloon, fully equipped galley, two toilets and a shower.
RYA Practical Courses
Start Yachting – An excellent beginners course lasting 2 days where you will be introduced to sailing and seamanship and learn the basics of sailing, crewing under supervision and safety.
Competent Crew – This is a 5 day course that requires no previous sailing experience although if you have already completed the Start Yachting course, the duration of this one will be reduced to 3 days. You will be taught how to prepare the boat for sea, hoist and lower the sails, steer under sail and motor, row a dingy, keep lookout, assist in emergency situations and generally become an effective member of the crew.
Day Skipper – You will need to prove some sailing knowledge or have already completed the Competent Crew course to undergo this one. You will learn the ‘rules of the road', seamanship, pilotage, boat handling under power and sail, meteorology, engine maintenance and minor repairs, victualling, crew welfare and emergency situations. On successful completion of the course you will be qualified to skipper a yacht safely by day in familiar waters.
Coastal Skipper – This is the course most students strive for and requires previous sailing experience or to have already completed the Day Skipper course and Shore Based Coastal Skipper theory course. During this course you will learn the techniques to pilot a yacht on coastal and offshore passages and get to skipper the yacht during a long passage. You will be taught to prepare for sea, yacht handling under power and sail, passage planning, emergency situations and piloting in adverse weather conditions. On successful completion of the course you will be qualified to skipper a yacht on coastal passages by night and day.
RYA Theoretical Courses
Essential Navigation & Seamanship – This course can be taken over 2 full days or in short sessions and is handy to have when going for any of the practical courses. During the course you will learn safety, anchorage, buoyage, engine checks, ‘rules of the road', pilotage, visual and electronic navigation, charts, passage planning, tidal awareness and weather forecasts.
Day Skipper – This can be taken as an intensive week long course or in a series of short sessions where you will learn the basics of the yachts lights, how to navigate during the day in familiar waters and an introduction to night sailing. During the course you will be taught the basics of seamanship, collision regulations, emergency and safety including calls, flares, life rafts, jackets and safety harnesses, chart and electronic chart work, position fixing, plotting a course to steer, the essentials of coastal navigation and pilotage, tides and weather forecasting.
Coastal Skipper – It is advisable to have completed the Day Skipper theory course before considering taking this one. The course can be taken as an intensive week long course or in a series of short sessions and on successful completion gives you the theory knowledge required to take a Yachtmaster course. The course will cover topics such as course shaping and plotting, position fixing, electronic position finding equipment, tidal knowledge, plotting weather systems, taking and interpreting forecasts, weather prediction by observation and using a barometer, use of almanacs and admiralty publications, collision regulations and customs and excise regulations for cruising abroad.
