San Miguel de Salinas

The town of San Miguel de Salinas is situated slightly inland between Orihuela Costa and Torrevieja. It is predominantly a Spanish speaking town and its close proximity to Torrevieja makes it a popular residential choice for people working in the city who prefer the more laid back lifestyle of a small town. In typical Spanish tradition, life in San Miguel de Salinas revolves around the town square where of an evening families congregate for a chat or coffee in one of the street side cafes and old men in flat caps sit outside tapas bars playing cards and putting the world to rights. During the summer months the municipal swimming pool is a popular place with the town's younger generation and, depending on the time of year, live music can be enjoyed at the bandstand.

Visitors to San Miguel have a choice of shops, bars and restaurants, and on Wednesday mornings there is a lively outdoor market where most of the townsfolk do their weekly fresh produce shopping. probably the most famous establishment in town is Restaurante Las Cuevas that is built in an actual cave. The charming restaurant offers a selection of traditional local dishes and the little nooks and crannies of the interior provide an intimate setting, perfect for a romantic candle lit dinner. Alternately there is a large outdoor courtyard for al fresco dining during the balmy summer evenings.

Beaches & Activities

Within a 20 minute drive from San Miguel de Salinas there is an excellent selection of sandy beaches to choose from, either in the resort area of Orihuela Costa or the beaches of Torrevieja. Many have received the Blue Flag Award for their facilities and cleanliness and Orihuela Costa has recently been recognised as having the largest number of Blue Flag Awards for its size in the whole of Spain.

The nearby natural park surrounding the Torrevieja-La Mata salt lakes has an interesting array of flora & fauna throughout its hiking trails and La Pedrera Lake makes for a lovely day out to enjoy a swim and picnic. Just a few minutes drive from San Miguel is the exciting Lo Rufete Multi-Adventure Park that boasts a range of activities for all the family including quad bikes, paintball, kayaking and horse riding. Visitors taking part in the activities can enjoy free use of the park's swimming pool and picnic/BBQ areas. A whole host of water sports are available in Torrevieja's marina area including the latest craze of Flyboarding and further water sports can be found in Orihuela Costa.
