In the far north of Costa Blanca's interior is the charming town of Ontinyent. Lying in a valley between the mountain ranges of Grossa Sierra and Agullent-Benicadell Sierras, this large town offers visitors the best of both worlds with a modern infrastructure and outstanding natural beauty of the surrounding countryside. The modern retail and designer shops of El Teler Mall in the area of Dos de Maig sit side by side with Ontinyent's old town, divided by the river Clariano where visitors can explore the maze of small streets and alleys.

Modern Ontinyent

The lively commercial centre boasts popular shops and supermarkets such as the German chain Aldi as well as large retail shops and several fast food outlets. El Teler Shopping Complex offers a multi screen cinema, various shops, boutiques, supermarket and a hair & beauty salon. A stroll through the Plaza de la Coronació reveals a number of market stalls selling clothing, leather goods, accessories, electronics, arts & crafts and delicious fresh food and snacks. The town also boasts a large sports complex with racket courts, athletics track and both an Olympic size outdoor swimming pool and a heated indoor pool.

Historical Ontinyent

The oldest part of the town is the medieval area of La Vila which is home to the Santa Maria Church and Sant Roc christian door. The area's narrow winding streets come alive each year in August when a splendid medieval market is held during the parades and festivities of the popular Moors and Christians Festival.

Throughout the old town there are parks and plazas lined with cafes and traditional tapas bars and the Plaza Mayor is home to the town hall and original state buildings. The pedestrianised Plaza de la Concepció is lined with further historical buildings, shops, bars, restaurants and the interesting Centre de Cultura and Museo Fester.

Ontinyent's Countryside

Aside from the two surrounding mountain ranges that offer a choice of outdoor pursuits such as hiking, mountain biking, horse riding and rock climbing, about 5 kilometres from the town is a magical place. Running through the Clariano river gorge are the beautiful natural rock pools of Pou Clar. This icy mountain stream tumbles over rocks and small cliffs in a series of charming waterfalls creating crystal clear pools where, even in the peak summer months, a swim will leave you shivering cold but wonderfully refreshed.

With a mountain backdrop and pine forests hugging the rugged shoreline, the town of Moraira lies in a picturesque bay in the north of the Costa Blanca.
